A ceramic coating job is roughly 80 percent labor and 20 percent product. That surprises most people. The bottle of coating is the least expensive part of the entire process.
The coating chemically bonds to your clear coat. Whatever the paint looks like at the moment of application is what gets locked in. Swirl marks, water spots, light oxidation, bonded contamination, all of it gets sealed under a hard nano coating layer that is designed to stay put for years.
That is why prep is not an upsell. It is the job.
The prep sequence before any coating touches the paint
- Deep wash and decontamination. Removing road film, bug residue, and brake dust so nothing gets trapped under the coating.
- Iron removal and clay treatment. Nebraska highway driving embeds metal particles into clear coat. These have to come out chemically and mechanically.
- Paint correction. Machine polishing to remove swirls, wash marring, and light scratches. This is the single biggest variable in labor hours.
- Panel wipe. Stripping every trace of polishing oil so the coating bonds directly to bare clear coat. Skip this and the coating fails early.
- Application and leveling. Panel by panel, with careful timing so the product flashes and levels evenly.
- Controlled cure. Undisturbed time in a clean indoor environment.
A $199 coating skips most of that list. There is no way around the math. You cannot pay for eight to twelve hours of skilled labor with two hundred dollars.
The Three Factors That Move Your Price
1. Vehicle size
A Miata and a Suburban do not take the same amount of time. More painted surface area means more square footage to decontaminate, more panels to polish, and more coating to apply and level before it flashes.
Three-row SUVs, full-size trucks, and vans sit at the upper end of our range. Compact cars and sedans sit at the lower end. This is the most predictable part of the quote.
2. Paint condition going in
This is where quotes diverge the most between vehicles of the same size. A two-year-old garage-kept sedan that has only been hand washed needs a light polish. A five-year-old daily driver that has been through automatic car washes all winter needs significantly more correction work.
Automatic brush washes are the main culprit in Omaha. They install fine circular scratches across every horizontal panel. Under direct sun those show up as a spider web pattern. Correcting them takes real machine time, and that time is what pushes a quote from $750 toward $820.
3. Added prep beyond standard correction
Some vehicles arrive with heavy water spotting from sprinklers or hard water, tree sap etching, or overspray. These require dedicated chemical treatments and additional passes before the paint is coating-ready.

Why Cheap One-Year Coatings Cost More Over Time
The low-cost coating market runs on a simple model. Minimal prep, a consumer-grade product, and a one-year expectation. The car looks glossy for a few months because polishing oils and the fresh product are doing the visual work.
Then the coating thins out. Water stops beading. The hydrophobic behavior fades, and you are back where you started, except now there is a partially failed layer on the paint that has to be polished off before anything new can be applied.
Run the numbers across four years. Four cheap coatings at $300 each is $1,200, plus four rounds of stripping and reprepping, plus four years of paint that was never properly corrected in the first place. A single professionally installed Optimum Hyper Shine application at $750 to $820 is less money and dramatically better paint condition at the end.

Why Ceramic Coating Is Drop-Off Only

The Carfax reporting matters more than people expect. When you sell or trade the vehicle, documented paint protection is part of the record rather than something you have to explain verbally to a skeptical buyer.
Protecting Your Investment After Installation
The coating needs time to fully harden. Follow these three rules and you get the full performance you paid for.
- Wait seven days before the first wash. The coating continues cross-linking after you drive away. Washing early interrupts that.
- Hand wash only, with pH-neutral soap. High-alkaline degreasers strip the hydrophobic top layer and shorten the coating’s usable life.
- Avoid automatic car washes entirely. Spinning brushes will scratch straight through a coating. This is the fastest way to undo the correction work you just paid for.
